Though watercolor is my primary medium, my work is often executed using multiple materials. I have a very broad range of skills as a result of years of self-guided explorations into different modes of crafting and self-expression. I am familiar with odd materials such as leather, plastic, specialty fabrics, beads, and real human hair. Having knowledge of garment construction, hair pieces, and makeup-art help me to articulate these and similar elements in my paintings. When I paint, I like to start with an under-painting of thin liquid acrylics. These help me build up my dark values quickly, and lay down some very bright undertones on which to build upon. The majority of my rendering is done with watercolors; I render my paintings in an almost decorative way, keeping my colors very bright, and my textured areas stylized. Despite any stylization that may occur, I still aim to produce a comfortable and believable environment by turning my shapes, using linear and atmospheric perspective, and by having a solid drawing foundation to support the colors on top. I finish my work using colored pencils to reinforce my values and add a linear quality back into my work.
I find inspiration for my work in books, documentaries, films, in fashion, and in the theatre. My visual interests always spring from academic interests such as science, history, material culture, zoology, mythology, archeology, astronomy, and literature. I like to know a little about everything, and am a storehouse of obscure facts and when drawing from such a large pool of material, the images that stick with me might be about anything under the sun.
