Zeke, Lord of Darkness

  • by

This is Zeke, Lord of Darkness and proof of concept for animals-as-dark-sorcerers portraiture. I feel a regal portrait is an appropriate thing to post for President’s Day…compositionally speaking.

Zeke is a mischievous and smart good boy, with a face so much resembling a hell-hound that I was compelled to depict him as a being fresh out of hell.

It started as simple set of thumbnails which I mused about in my last post on a look inside my sketchbook. Then the full size drawing came together with watercolors on an 11×14″ inch pad of hot press watercolor paper. Below is an in-progress photo of my progress after my first good sitting with this painting. This piece went unusually quickly for me, thanks in part to my totally manic art-energy lately.

Here’s another progress shot, much further along, but still not complete. A painting really starts to look finished after I’ve clearly defined my edges and given everything some texture to make it feel solid.
