Sunset Sail

  • by

We got a small tease of spring before plunging back into below-freezing highs, prompting me to paint another wish for warmer weather. This tiny watercolor was supposed to be less of a burden to finish in it’s diminutive format; a relaxing way to pass time with my hands

I won’t bore you with too many progress shots–the composition and execution is so simple. Top-to-bottom, background to foreground, as it always goes with watercolor. A few colorful blocks to remind me I’m painting a sunset.

The scene is from a camping trip two (?) years ago, watching a stranger on a sunset sail. I was watching from a friend’s island in up-state NY, in the middle of a lake, in the middle of nowhere, when it was warm enough that a sail sounded nice even though the sun had dipped behind the mountains. Without wishing time away, I can’t wait to get back to warm nights and sunsets in the wind.

5×7″ watercolor on cold-press paper, matted to 8×10″ in one of my new fancy archival kits.
