Sourcing Wedding Décor

  • by

This is a post about shopping for wedding decorations, because I can’t make everything.

Especially not the organic items; I need farmers and tanners for that bit. Starting in the spring of 2021 I started my long and particular hunt for the more elaborate wedding decoration elements. The ones that I was willing to drop a little extra cash on because these items would become home-decor after the big day.

Once my plans for the head-table were drawn up, color schemes roughed out, and visual mood felt, I had a short multi-year shopping list for animal skulls, pelts, crates, dried plants, weaponry and squash. I started my quest where anyone from New England might, the Brimfield Flea Market. A multi-day, multi-field event, the Brimfield Flea draws tens-of-thousands of shoppers three times a year. My secret to a good day is to go on a week day, preferably in the rain, and wear those walking shoes. I walked over 13 miles on my first wedding-trip and came home with several pelts and skulls!

Some future pelts Jake and I found together at the Connecticut Renaissance Faire, and we bought some antique apple-crates from a small vendor in NoHo.

Over the past two years I’ve had cause to make multiple pop-ins at my local thrift shops, and found several pewter candlesticks to incorporate into the design by being vigilant.

While I’m proud to say that most of the big-ticket items are one-of-a-kind, vintage, and sold by individuals or small businesses, I did turn to the internet for some bulk linens, glassware, and dried grasses. I made an effort to source my own dried grass, but found nothing so striking locally as what can be cheaply sent to me with the click of a button.

For the perishables however, I was back to a local farm where I found a great deal on the perfect small white pumpkins, exactly as I’d envisioned them. 10 for $8! I wasn’t going to beat that, and good thing because I needed 50.

Now that you’ve taken the journey through some of my shopping trips with me, check back next week for a few photos of how all the décor came together! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
