Gold Stuffed Circlet Hat

  • by

Glad to be back with more creations to post after a month of progress. I’ve been reading, thinking, resting, and filling the creative wells. Lots of yoga and dance, including some recent public performances. The first renaissance fair of the year for us is fast approaching at the end of the month and I’m bullying all of my friends to come out in the spring chill. We’ve had a lot of second-winter lately after a short string of days flirting with 60 degrees, and I’ve been very sensitive to the cold returned. I got the garden started on a warm day but I’ve retreated once more to embroidery and books under stacks of blankets.

Today I have a finished golden circlet made from stripes of remnants and some shimmery trim. I was inspired by the tutorial below and lots of historical illuminations of ladies in round not-quite-crown headwear. It didn’t come out as smooth as in the tutorial because I didn’t use a stretchy material like velvet, which is recommended.

It seems that the circlet’s primary function is to hold a veil onto the head to lessen the need for pins. The veil is also new, cut and hemmed myself from real silk. Silk because I want something gentle on the hair, but that does make it much more slippery.

I joined my regional SCA Facebook group but as of yet haven’t made any new connections. In the meantime I’m enjoying this little detour into the world of hats and veils and with have another cap to show you soon.

Since you scrolled to the end, I reward you with this photo from a recent dance performance by the ‘advanced’ belly dance troupe classes I’ve joined. I’m the one in the mask in front. Costume skills applied to life when I know just the thing to get fringe to stay on a KN95.
