Maybe it’s not so much of a makeover as I added one smart new piece of furniture and did some deep decluttering.
I visited a friend who has a simple IKEA cabinet that was actually deep enough to store 18×24″ paintings flat. That’s really hard to find when it comes to wardrobes. Previously my craft room has been a room of bins and piles and boxes. Every bit of perimeter floorspace was used to store costumes, fabric, paintings, and supplies. I knew it was time to go vertical, but I was having trouble finding the right piece. We’ve been in the house long enough that we’re trying to be done with “starter” furniture that falls apart and needs to be replaced in 7 to 8 years.

My friend’s cabinet is the base model but it was still holding up really well. IKEA has expanded their collections to include MDF and solid wood options in their custom builds, so for not too much crazy money I was able to upgrade to a custom built PAX unit with solid wood doors. The thing weighs a ton but I was able to assemble it myself. Having this one new giant wardrobe allowed me to get rid of all the stacks of bins and boxes and sort everything onto shelves. Jake will install antique knobs for me once I find the right ones.

I also went deep into the closet and cleaned out old drawing supplies from college, donating what I no longer needed to the local maker’s space. This was a great deep clean to undertake in late winter, when the home-improvement bug strikes hardest. Now my space looks brighter and has room for more creating.
