I’m back with a work in progress post.
I recently finished a 24×30″ painting in acrylic of a beloved golf course on commission. With such a big painting its important to throw down a lot of color quickly to get that white canvas out of view, but with enough precision as not to obscure the transferred sketch.
This is an expansive aerial view of the course, where atmospheric perspective and color continuity were top-concern. For this reason I spent more time on the underpainting than normal.
Once most of the white was covered up, I went back in for the second and third passes working distance-to-foreground, top-to-bottom as usual. The ocean was a lot of fun to build up with transparent layers using matte medium.
The trees and shrubbery involved a lot more scumbling and high-opacity detail-work. This is about where I stopped updating the client on progress to preserve the drama of the final-reveal. I’ll leave you with the same. Back next week with the finished piece.
