Summer Crafting Part III: Bottle Cap Necklaces

Another part of my jewelry making endeavor has been to make necklaces out of recycled bottle caps. These youthful, one-of-a-kind necklaces are all for sale on my Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/Shaunart

I start with a bottle cap, currently all from alcoholic beverages. I clean them, and then fill them with pretty, naturally eroded rocks. In the cap above, I added some foil shapes, and in another, a musical charm. But sometimes I also leave the rocks the sole adorning feature.

Once the decorations are all in place exactly as I like them, I glaze over them with a glass glaze. I intentionally do not dome the glaze, because I want to keep the glaze looking like water flowing over the rocks.

Then a hole is drilled through the pendant, and a cord of either leather or suede is strung through the hole. I use nickel-plated turnbuckle clasps to attach the two ends. I like turnbuckle clasps more than lobster clasps. I find them much easier to use.

That’s all there is to it! These necklaces are rugged, youthful, fun, beachy attire. Quirky, fun, and easy to wear.
