Printed Cotton Jumpsuit

  • by

This summer has been so hot!! The humidity and unusual stretches of high (90s+) heat in the northeast have been a brutal symptom of a rapidly changing climate. I’m over here trying to find a little joy and comfort in clothing. I’ve always loved clothes; they impact my mood and how I move through the world. I’ve been sewing costumes for over 20 years but sometimes I make my own wardrobe pieces with no special occasion.

You can’t go wrong with a jumpsuit when it’s hot out. Especially as a short person, I like the uninterrupted pattern. Still, it can be a challenge to find a flattering top on a jumpsuit. I like the wrap-look for the angles but it’s still easy to get in and out of. For the sewing pattern I used NewLook 6493 view D with no major alterations. I made the straps a little wider for better coverage and the belt thinner (the pattern literally wanted it twice as thick as shown).

The unwashed cotton is a little stiff still but you trade structure for comfort as a garment ages. I’m excited to see how this one wears given a little time. No, I don’t pre-wash most fabrics that I sew with because I’m impatient, energy conscious, and honestly it’s never made a difference on anything but wool. Will I live to regret it? Surely eventually.
